Replace WhatsApp Class Groups with One Parent Communication App
South African schools rely on parent communication. But class WhatsApp groups have become a liability — noisy, off-topic, leaky, hard to moderate, and impossible to audit when something goes wrong. MyEncore replaces them with one official channel per child, owned by the school.

Why WhatsApp class groups fail at scale
- 50+ parents per class means every official message gets buried in birthday wishes and lift-club arrangements within minutes
- Parents leave or change numbers — no audit of who actually saw the message
- Rumours and complaints about teachers go viral in seconds, off-record
- POPIA exposure — parent phone numbers visible to every other parent in the group
- No way to send a message to "all Grade 7 parents whose fees are overdue" — every targeted communication becomes a manual filter
- Class teacher is dragged into 24/7 admin moderation duty
- When the principal needs to send an emergency message, it sits below 200 unread group messages by morning
What MyEncore gives parents and schools instead
- Official school messages appear in a dedicated school feed in the parent app — separate from chat noise
- Push notifications for each child, by class and by topic (academic, fees, transport, sports, events)
- Per-parent delivery audit — schools see exactly who received and opened each message
- Targeted broadcasts — send to one class, one year group, one bus route, parents-with-outstanding-fees, or parents-of-rugby-team
- One-way and two-way modes — official announcements stay one-way; teachers can open per-parent two-way chat per child when needed
- POPIA compliant — parent contact details never visible to other parents
- Multi-channel — push first, fall back to SMS (and optionally WhatsApp Business API for absolute reach)
- School-owned record — if a parent disputes "I was never told", the school has a delivery receipt
Versus ClassDojo
ClassDojo is a popular class-level behaviour-and-update tool, but it doesn't replace your school's actual administration: no attendance register, no fee invoicing, no transport, no SA-SAMS export. Schools using ClassDojo end up running 4-5 systems in parallel. MyEncore covers the parent engagement that ClassDojo offers, plus everything else a school runs.
How schools switch off WhatsApp groups
- Week 1 — Parallel run. School sends every announcement on BOTH WhatsApp and MyEncore. Parents see them appear in both places.
- Week 2 — MyEncore first. Announcements go on MyEncore 30 minutes before WhatsApp. Parents who installed the app stop checking WhatsApp first.
- Week 3 — MyEncore only. Class admin posts in WhatsApp: "From Monday, all official school messages move to MyEncore. The WhatsApp group becomes parent-organised social only." Parents who haven't installed get one final SMS reminder.
- Week 4 onwards. WhatsApp group either dissolves or becomes a parent social space (no school staff). The school regains its time, its audit trail, and its sanity.
Tip: involve the SGB and class reps early. Some parents are emotionally attached to their class WhatsApp groups. The pitch isn't "WhatsApp bad" — it's "your school messages deserve their own channel where they aren't drowned out by chat."
Pricing
Parent communication is included free with MyEncore. The whole platform is R50 per learner per year (under 1000 learners) or R27 in Year 1 for schools with 1000+ learners (see taper). SMS is billed at R0.46 incl VAT per message; push and in-app messaging are free.
What about the WhatsApp Business API?
For schools that want to keep WhatsApp as a channel without the group chaos, MyEncore integrates with the WhatsApp Business API — official one-to-one templated messages from a verified school number, with full delivery audit. Ask us about WhatsApp Business setup.
